What are lines and wrinkles?
Lines and wrinkles are natural changes in the skin’s surface and structure. They may first appear as fine creases and folds, and over time, may deepen or become more visible. While these changes are a normal part of ageing, you can choose if and how you’d like to address them.
At Cambridge Contour Clinic, we view lines and wrinkles simply as one of many skin concerns that respond well to a planned, tailored combination of assessment, treatment and ongoing care.
Contributing factors
Here are key elements that influence the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Knowing what applies to you helps us build the right plan.
- Collagen & Elastin decline – As we age, the skin’s natural support network (collagen, elastin) gradually reduces, making creases more likely.
- Muscle movement (dynamic wrinkles) – Repeated facial expressions (smiling, frowning, raising eyebrows) create lines that, over time, may become visible even at rest.
- Sun / UV exposure & photo-ageing – UV light accelerates breakdown of collagen and elastin, and contributes to skin thinning and the development of wrinkles.
- Lifestyle influences – Smoking, poor sleep, dehydration, high stress and pollutants can all reduce skin resilience and contribute to wrinkle formation.
- Genetic & individual skin-type factors – Your skin’s inherent thickness, oil production, and genetic behaviour play a role.
- Skin care & maintenance – Inconsistent or absent skin-care (especially sun protection and suitable active ingredients) means your skin may be more vulnerable. Preventive action really helps.
When & Where They Appear
When?
Fine lines often begin in the late 20s to early 30s, though visible wrinkles often evolve in one’s 40s and beyond. The rate and visibility vary widely from person to person.
Where?
- Upper face – Forehead lines, glabellar “11’s”, crow’s feet around the eyes.
- Mid-face / Smile zone – Lines around the mouth, naso-labial folds, marionette lines.
- Neck & décolletage – Skin here is thinner and may show creases or horizontal lines.
- Static vs Dynamic lines – Dynamic lines appear with movement; static lines are present at rest. For example, upper-face dynamic lines respond well to muscle-relaxing treatments; static folds often need volume/support or resurfacing.
At Cambridge Contour Clinic, we evaluate where your lines lie and what type they are, so we can match the most appropriate treatment for your individual skin.
Treatments
At Cambridge Contour Clinic, our approach to treating lines and wrinkles is deeply personalised, evidence-based, and underpinned by complete honesty. During your consultation, we will carefully assess your skin’s condition, explore the specific concerns and aesthetic goals you wish to achieve, and consider important factors such as your lifestyle, daily habits, and personal preferences.
This comprehensive evaluation enables us to recommend the most suitable, effective treatment pathway tailored exclusively to you, ensuring realistic outcomes, optimal safety, and results that enhance your natural appearance with subtlety and refinement.
Anti-Wrinkle Injections
If your lines are driven by muscle movement - for example, frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet - then relaxing those muscles can reduce the skin creasing and help softer lines appear smoother.
We offer this treatment in-clinic; our practitioners will explain suitability, expected outcome, downtime and follow-up.
Dermal Fillers / Volumisers
Dermal fillers and volumisers are injectable treatments designed to address static lines and wrinkles that remain visible at rest. These occur due to the natural loss of volume and support in areas such as the cheeks, mouth corners, and lower face over time. By replenishing essential hyaluronic acid or similar substances, volumisers restore underlying structure, smooth out folds like nasolabial creases and marionette lines, and enhance facial contours.
Our expert practitioners ensure precise, natural-looking results with minimal downtime, tailored to your individual needs for subtle rejuvenation and long-lasting improvement in the appearance of those folds.
Skin Boosters Treatment
Injectable treatments that deliver substances like hyaluronic acid directly into the skin to deeply hydrate, improve texture, and promote elasticity. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which add volume.
They work by nourishing the skin from within, leading to a smoother, more radiant complexion and a reduction in fine lines without altering facial features.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a treatment that stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely with controlled micro-injuries, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin (“collagen induction therapy”).
It smoothes fine lines and texture irregularities, creating brighter, healthier and younger-looking skin.
Other potential treatment options
Here at Cambridge Contour Clinic, we focus on minimally invasive techniques to optimise healing and cosmetic outcomes. However, we believe in transparency to help our clients make an informed choice on how they would like to proceed. Therefore, if we are aware of other recognised treatment methods that may be suitable for you, we will discuss these during your consultation.

Depends on treatment: muscle-relaxing injections often show results in a few days; resurfacing may take weeks.

Varies by treatment, by individual. We’ll discuss this with you.
Are treatments painful?
Most are very tolerable; discomfort and downtime vary. We’ll explain during your consultation.
